US: 5 million piglets die due to PEDv

19/03/2014
The rapidly spreading Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDv) in the US is estimated to have killed 6% of the hog population since last summer, and the US Department of Agricultural has announced extra funding to halt its spread.

As reported in our US Perspective on market intelligence this week, the figure could be as high as 5 million piglets.

PEDv has been confirmed on 4,500 farms in 27 states after first being detected in May 2013.

As of December 1, 2013, the country's hog herd stood at 65.9 million head, according to USDA.
