Hong Kong market reopens for US beef

The US and Hong Kong have agreed new terms that pave the way for expanded exports of US beef.

Only deboned beef from all cattle and certain bone-in beef from cattle less than 30 months of age have been shipped since 2003 but the new ruling means the full range will now be allowed.

Hong Kong is the fourth-largest market for US beef and beef product exports, with sales reaching a record $823 million in 2013.

Hong Kong banned US beef in 2003 following the detection of a bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)-positive animal in the country. Last year, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) granted the US negligible risk status for BSE.

Mexico, Uruguay, Ecuador and Sri Lanka have also lifted their longstanding restrictions this year to provide full access for US beef and beef products.
