The new director general of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has promised to focus on protecting livestock and securing food safety during her five year tenure.

Dr Monique Eloit said: “I will give high priority to improving animal health in livestock production, which contributes significantly to sustainable socio-economic development in the livestock sector, notably in the world’s poorest countries.”

The Sixth Strategic Plan will focus on improving veterinary services, “since these are the cornerstones of an effective world health system – which is essential if we are to meet the challenges facing our planet”.
