OIE sets out first global strategy on animal welfare

26/05/2017
The World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) has published its first global strategy on animal welfare, which it says has been adopted by the 180 member countries.

Primarily endorsed at the 4th OIE Global Conference on Animal welfare (Guadalajara, Mexico, December 2016), it aims to achieve “a world where the welfare of animals is respected, promoted and advanced, in ways that complement the pursuit of animal health, human well-being, socioeconomic development and environmental sustainability”.

The strategy is based on four pillars: development of international animal welfare standards; enhancement of capacity building and training of veterinary services; communication with governments and the public to raise awareness on animal welfare; and progressive implementation of OIE standards.

It said animal welfare standards will continue to be developed with input from international experts. Additional work is in progress for standards for farmed reptiles.

Further details can be found on the OIE’s website.
