Poor start for biggest meat-eaters, despite home-cooking

Uruguay got off to a poor start in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, losing to Costa Rica in the opening round of matches.

This happened in spite of the Uruguayan squad having beef from their own country as the mainstay of their diet, with their National Meat Institute (INAC) shipping an initial 200 kilos of different cuts of beef north to the team’s training camp in Brazil, where the tournament is taking place.

Commentators in Uruguay said the team meant no disrespect to the high quality of beef that the host country produces, but pointed out that INAC had already taken the same step on behalf of Uruguay’s athletes at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the London 2012 Olympics.

And as the world champions in beef consumption, at 60 kilos per person per year, INAC was also keen to use the occasion to promote a home-grown product.
