Mexico removes import restrictions on US beef
The Mexican government is making regulatory changes that allow for import of US beef from cattle of any age, lifting the 30-month age limit and the last of Mexico’s BSE-related restrictions.
“This is an issue that the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has been working on for a number of years, and resolving it has been a lengthy process,” said Chad Russell, USMEF director for Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic.
“We’re experiencing a period of very high beef prices and constraints on supply, in what has always been a rather price-sensitive market. So we feel that having new supply options available will help us maintain a strong presence in the market and grow our export volume to Mexico.”
Last year Mexico was the second-largest destination for US beef in terms of volume (216,386 metric tons) and ranked third in value ($925.3 million).
