USMEF hopes Trans-Pacific Partnership will bring Vietnam breakthrough

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has said it hopes Vietnam’s participation in negotiations over the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership multi-state free trade agreement will make it easier for US packer firms to export beef to the Asian country.

Joel Haggard, USMEF senior vice-president for Asia Pacific, said recently that US beef faces “significant duties and product restrictions” in Vietnam, including a ban on beef offal and a 30-month cattle age-limit on muscle cuts, but said he hoped the Trans-Pacific Partnership would bring improvements.

As of August 2013, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam are all involved in negotiations to bring the Trans-Pacific Partnership to a successful conclusion.
