Indonesia takes step to build up cattle herd

A packer firm in Indonesia has secured the necessary permits to begin importing heifers, with the first animals likely to arrive before the end of March.

In total, PT Santosa Agrindo will bring in 1,500 heifers in this first batch.

Official figures from May 2013 show that the national herd had declined to 14.2 million head, a drop of 15% compared to the figure of 16.7 million head in June 2011.

The government hopes to import 750,000 cattle to help build the herd size back up, as well as to help meet domestic demand for beef of 575,000 tonnes per year, 77% of which can be supplied domestically.
