Three deaths at Kanpur tannery

15/06/2015
The Times of India has reported that three people have suffocated while working at a tannery in the Jajmau district of Kanpur – one of them the tannery owner’s son.

Police have said they will investigate the circumstances around the deaths.

Tanneries in the area are under scrutiny from environmental bodies and are battling over waste disposal and discharge.

Tannery owners are in court to debate a new zero discharge system officials want them to fund, but they say they have already paid for a suitable system.

Earlier this year, work at numerous tanneries was suspended while inspections were carried out.
