The Times of India has reported that a committee of tannery owners will be able to vet the maintenance expenses of Common Effluent Treatment plant at Jajmau after they complained about a hike in billing rates that they said was “illegal”.

The Central Leather Institute (CLI) presented a report of for treatment of tannery discharge to divisional commissioner Mohd Iftikharuddin which will be presented to the National Green Tribunal on July 24.

Mr Iftikharuddin told the CLI to include disposal of solid waste and chrome in the action plan as well as treatment and disposal of the tannery discharge.

The meeting is part of an ongoing investigation into the disposal of tannery waste. About 40 tanneries operate in the district.
