Leather is a ‘focus sector’ for the Indian government

India’s ministry of commerce and industry has said the value of the country’s leather-sector exports in the 2013-2014 financial year (which ends on March 31) will be $5.9 billion, indicating a rise of 17.8% compared to 2013-2014.

Minister of state Nirmala Sitharaman said further substantial growth is expected in the years ahead and that leather has been included as one of the ‘focus sectors’ for a new programme called Make-in-India. This new government programme includes short-term and medium-term initiatives such as scaling up the availability of finished leather, developing skills and upgrading technology.

As part of the same initiative, Kanpur, Ambur and Agra will receive official recognition as ‘Towns of Export Excellence’ for their production of leather, leathergoods and leather footwear.
