India: Workshop highlights leather workers’ rights

01/10/2015
A workshop to inform leather sector workers of their legal rights has been held in the Unnao, near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, according to The Times of India.

A district judge claimed 95% of local workers are not on the books, or part of the ‘unorganised sector’, which affords them fewer employee rights.

However, new measures are being adopted to empower workers and Mohad Rizwan-ul Haq encouraged tannery workers to seek free legal aid available under the new act.

“The paralegal volunteers can help them in many ways, such as jobs cards, ration cards and voters’ cards,” he said.
