India: Tannery workers protest against production ban

31/01/2013
More than 55,000 tannery workers are expected to attend talks on February 9 in Kanpur to protest against the closure of tanneries during the two-month Hindu festival Maha Kumbh Mela.

Work has reportedly been suspended at 400 Indian tanneries to keep the waters cleaner, as part of the festival involves pilgrims submersing themselves in various sacred rivers.

Local press say many have been left unemployed and are struggling to afford food, and tannery owners report that they are losing lucrative contracts.

The labour department had asked owners to provide compensation for the period during which their units would be closed.
