A first for Chennai event: new design fair

30/09/2015
India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has announced that a new design fair will take place for the first time in parallel with the India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai next year, from February 1-3, 2016.

It wants to attract overseas designers and put them in contact with Indian manufacturers and exporters of leather, leathergoods and leather footwear.

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, launched a wider ‘Make in India’ programme in 2014 and the government has named the leather industry among the focus sectors for the initiative, with design a particular priority area.

A Designers’ Fair will, therefore, take place for the first time at the Hotel Le Royal Meridien in Chennai, coinciding with IILF.

The Indian Leather Sector has been given an ambitious target of achieving a total turnover of $27 billion by 2020, with export revenues of $15 billion and domestic sales of $12 billion. This is a big step up from current overall turnover of $12.5 billion.
