Indian leather and footwear associations are aiming to double revenues in the next five years to $27 billion, according to reports in Indian press.

The Council of Leather Exports (CLE) Footwear Design and Development Agency and Central Leather Research Institute are planning a series of promotional activities, including road shows, to encourage growth.

CLE chairman M Rafeeque Ahmed told The Hindu: “The target has been set in consultation with the Commerce Ministry by bringing in the leather sector under the purview of Make in India scheme.”

The paper reported that in 2014, leather sector sales amounted to $13 billion, of which exports accounted for $6.5 billion. By 2020, the export target is $15 billion.
