Leather Pipeline: US hides suppliers ‘back in the game’ as prices level out

In the latest edition of our exclusive Leather Pipeline report, we hear that tanners are regaining confidence after the price correction, which has seen prices fall around 20% to 30%.

There could even be room for some prices to fall further.

The US hides suppliers are “back in the game” after reducing prices. “After they realised they had lost the battle by pushing the hide prices so high, they were not shy to take the beating and regain control,” says our author.

It will be interesting to see which countries pick up the business being lost by China. There have been reports of a big increase in leather production in Pakistan, India and possibly Bangladesh, “but the reports we are getting from these destinations are not indicating any rise in orders”.

With most of the industry preparing to travel to Asia for the All China Leather Exhibition at the end of the month, “the most important thing is to get a clear picture of leather demand for the coming season and whether the pipeline is filled. The situation in northern China will also be very important for the lower-priced items and cows”.

Leatherbiz subscribers can read the report in full on our Market Info page, where we also have reports of hide and skin trade and the leather industry from a US and European perspective.
