India’s beef debates affects tanners

Cows are revered in Hindu culture and their killing is banned in some states, but India is the world’s largest buffalo meat exporter.
The issue has escalated since Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party was elected 18 months ago.
Buffalo meat shipments fell 13.2% in volume in the April to September period to 598,901 tonnes, and 16% in value to $1.89 billion, according to Reuters, quoting data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics.
This has a knock-on effect to the hides available to tanners in the surrounding region. India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has reported a 7.6% decline in export revenues in the first five months of the current financial year, April-August.
