Bangladesh could face Eid cattle shortage

India’s crackdown on cattle trade with Bangladesh could lead to a shortage of animals for Eid al-Adha, the Muslim festival of slaughter.

Local publication The Daily Star has run an investigation into how the ruling is affecting local markets, and says beef and cattle prices are rocketing as supply dwindles.

It estimated the country normally imports around 2 million cows from its neighbour, even though the trade was not official.

The new rules mean people will have to pay more for the sacrificial animals, or perhaps do without, for the festival which this year falls around September 22.

Many of the region’s tanneries rely on these skins to fill their raw material needs for the year. Some say up to half the skins for the year are secured after this Eid.

India recently sent troops to its border to prevent cattle smuggling.
