A quarter of Pakistan’s Eid al-Adha hides and skins could go to waste

Chairman of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Muhammad Musaddiq, has said that as much as 25% of the hides and skins that became available in Pakistan during this year’s Eid al-Adha festival is likely to go to waste owing to poor preservation.

Mr Musaddiq said 7.3 million hides and skins had been collected by traders at the time of the festival, which began on October 5. He put a value of around $115 million on the material.

He complained that in addition to improper curing, material would go to waste if tanners in the main leather-producing areas of Karachi, Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot and other cities are unable to work without interruptions to the power supply.
