India deploys troops to halt cattle smuggling
Reports from India say the government has deployed 30,000 troops to its border with Bangladesh to prevent cattle smuggling.
While cows are seen as sacred by Hindus, the majority religion of India, they are valued for their meat in Bangladesh, where the population is mainly Muslim.
The tanning industry has been affected by the shortage of raw material recently as cattle leave the country.
The All India Skin and Hide Tanners and Merchants Association reacted to a proposed ban on beef in the Maharashtra region, saying tanners in Tamil Nadu will be particularly affected.
