India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has invited bids to win the right to compile a comprehensive study on the country’s leather and leathergoods sectors that it wants to commission.

It has asked interested parties to submit technical and financial details of their bids by the end of January.

CLE puts the value of India’s leather industry at $8.5 billion and exports at $5 billion, with 2.5 million people employed in the manufacture of leather and leathergoods there. The industry has grown by 8.5% in the last five years.

It puts the country’s livestock population at 21% of the global total for cattle (including buffalo) and 11% of sheep and goats.
