India: Kanpur tanneries granted a reprieve

29/05/2015
After months of inspections and tannery closures in India’s Kanpur district, authorities have granted a licence to tanneries to operate for a trial period in June.

From June 7 to 25, the 98 businesses will be allowed to restart production provided they have taken steps to monitor and reduce effluent discharge.

During the period, effluent levels will be checked by auditors from the National Green Tribunal.

The president of the Small Tanners Association said no tanneries were discharging waste into the Ganges, reported the Times of India.
