Indian tanners could foot bill for wastewater plant
India’s Central Pollution Control Board has agreed to the installation of a zero discharge plant at Jajmau, which should reduce pollution in the River Ganges, but which local tanners might have to contribute to.
The Times of India has reported that 400 tanneries operate in the area and a large amount of wastewater is not treated properly.
It quoted project manager Rajesh Kumar as saying the new treatment plant would cost around Rs 3 billion ($47 million) to build and run, and tannery owners might have to contribute 25% of the costs.
