Indian tannery destroyed in blaze

A fire that broke out in a tannery in Jajmau, India, last night is reported to have destroyed thousands of dollars worth of equipment and property and was thought to have been started by an electrical short circuit.

Around 25 firefighters attended the blaze, which spread to nearby leather and chemical units, although no one was hurt.

The Hindu Times reported that the presence of combustible chemicals hampered fire-fighting efforts, and that tannery workers and local people helped to move the drums for fear of the fire spreading to a nearby residential area.

The tannery is located in a leather complex that houses around 400 other tanneries.
