US tannery under spotlight after death of worker

03/08/2015
The US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recommended that a tannery be fined following the death of a worker in February.

Juan Gonzalez had been inspecting the bearing on a fleshing machine at D.R. Diedrich & Co in Milwaukee when a 1,500-pound steel roller disengaged. He had worked at the tannery for 13 years.

In 2009, OSHA accused the firm of breaching safety standards.

Diedrich employs 130 employees who produce 6,500 wet blue/wet white hides per day.
