Indian press have reported that nearly 80 tanneries in Ranipet’s Vellore district have had their electricity cut as part of an investigation into the 10 deaths at a tannery last week.

The incident happened when a sludge tank cracked as workers slept beneath it.

A tribunal has stated that local tanneries will be inspected to check that their common effluent treatment plants are safe after a request by government body The National Green Tribunal.
