In spite of its ongoing attempts to sell its leather business unit and its classification of its leather business as a “discontinued operation” in its 2012 results, specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant went ahead with the opening of a new leather excellence centre in Ranipet, Chennai,

It said this represented a major investment in its leather business, and was “a strong indication that the company’s leather business unit sees great opportunities for continued growth in the Indian leather manufacturing sector”.

Oliver Kinkel, head of Clariant’s global leather business unit said at the opening: “We see the country’s leather-related businesses growing and we expect to see above-average growth for our products and services. We are looking for double-digit growth of the business in India.”

Clariant already has major production sites at Kanchipuram and Roha, both situated close to major leather processing zones in different parts of India.

The new laboratory at Ranipet will have up-to-date machinery from many major Italian companies. Technicians there will be able to test chemical products in the on-site manufacture of leather, from beamhouse through to finishing. It also includes a new testing facility for water-repellent leathers.
