Fred Lang was born in 1918 in Glasgow and, after school, went to Leeds University to study leather manufacturing. He served in the navy during World War II and took part in operations in the North Sea, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and in the Pacific, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry.
When he returned home in 1946 he joined the family leather business W.J.& W. Lang Limited in Paisley, and, in 1965, became managing director of the firm and a founding director of the newly formed Scottish Tanning Industries Limited, which later became the Scottish Leather Group.
Fred Lang became the group’s chairman in 1982 and continued in that role until his retirement in 1985. He also became the president of The British Leather Federation.
During retirement, he enjoyed walking, climbing, fishing and shooting in the Scottish countryside and sailing on the west coast.
