Hermès opens leather apprenticeships centre at Fitilieu

Paris-based luxury goods company Hermès recently opened an apprenticeship training centre (known as École Hermès des Savoir-Faire in French) within its leather workshop at Fitilieu, located in the south-eastern department of Isère in France.

Accredited by the French national education authority, the training centre is the first of several to be rolled out by the brand. Ultimately, a centre will be set up for apprentices at each of its leatherworking hubs across the country, Hermès said.

The training offered by the luxury house is today recognised by a French national diploma in leatherworking, known as the CAP Maroquinerie.

What the brand described as its expert artisan-trainers, of which more than 90 are currently employed by Hermès, will be responsible for apprentices’ manual skills training, examination preparation and evaluation over the course of a year.

Applicants from all backgrounds are invited to apply for various training in leatherwork, conceptualised by the Parisian company as métiers (or trades) of excellence. On their graduation from the scheme, individuals will be invited to join one of the firm’s leather workshops, “among other possibilities”, it stated.

Hermès’ announcement of this initial training centre follows the opening of its eighteenth leather workshop in Montereau in June.
