Ex-BCG executive becomes Hermès leather artisan

A former global lead analyst for luxury and beauty at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Paris, Sophie Salaire, has revealed her pride and satisfaction in having switched careers for a role as an artisan sellier maroquinier – or maker of fancy leather goods – at Hermès last October.

In her current position, Ms Salaire works under the “one artisan, one bag” model to craft the Kelly To Go and Constance To Go styles. According to her LinkedIn profile, she now specialises in hand saddle stitching, trimming, polishing and beading.

In addition to several months of internal training, she also obtained a government-recognised CAP Maroquinerie qualification to demonstrate her capacity for leatherwork.

Describing her transition from consulting over to leatherwork as exciting, she emphasised her pride in now being part of a “vibrant and iconic” French luxury house. The artisan also praised her tutors for having transferred their own know-how with “passion, goodwill and trust”.

The Paris-based luxury brand recently opened its nineteenth leather workshop, hot on the heels of a new apprenticeship training centre in Fitilieu, France.
