TFL spells out the appeal of a career in the leather industry

Leather chemicals manufacturing group TFL is to continue with its programme of tanning apprenticeships at a number of its business units around the world.

One of its experts in technology for the beamhouse, Kai Burger, who is also responsible for the apprenticeship programme at Leverkusen, said in recent comments on social media that the leather industry offered young people an opportunity for an interesting career.

It’s one of the oldest crafts that exist, he said, but it also incorporates new thinking and new challenges because leather manufacturers have to use traditional skills to meet the demands of the very latest fashion trends.

He added that learning to use manual skills in this way would also allow young people to “live out their creativity” and to work in many different parts of the world.

“Leather is the most versatile material you can find,” Mr Burger said. “You can make sturdy leather for shoe uppers, or very soft leather for clothing or for bags.” He said he still found it fascinating to be able to produce this range of materials from material recycled from the food industry.
