Record start to the year for Australia’s red meat exporters
28/06/2019
This data has been made available by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), which explained that the increase has been driven by drought-induced stock turn off, strong demand from key export markets and Australian meat being more competitive in terms of price due to the decrease in the value of the Australian dollar.
The US remains Australia’s most important red meat export market, with shipments to the country up 87% in the year to April. It is closely followed by China.
Beef led the way, with exports of this meat up 27% year-on-year to more than $2 billion. MLA said this was in part due to “surging supply”. Lamb exports were 32% higher in the first four months of the year, reaching around $655 million, while exports of mutton were worth more than $270 million.
