Sharp drop in Australia’s goat slaughter in 2018

The latest figures from research and marketing body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) show that goat slaughter in the country fell 20% year-on-year to 1.65 million head in 2018.

This was one of the key takeaways from MLA’s Goatmeat Global Snapshot, which offers an insight into opportunities and challenges for the Australian goat industry.

It also showed that Australian goatmeat exports were worth $182.6 million last year, down 29% compared to 2017. It exported around 90% of its total production in 2018, with the US the destination for 68% of shipments.
