Mexico presents fresh opportunities for Australian beef

Australian beef exporters are preparing to reap rewards from new trade deal the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) including a new market in Mexico: exports rose 400% in 2018 compared with 2017.

While the volumes are still relatively small, this year’s are set to be higher than in 2018, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.

The 20-25% beef tariff will be eliminated within 10 years, the 10% sheepmeat and goat meat tariffs will be eliminated within eight years and the 10-15% tariffs on live animals will also be eliminated.

“Because of the opportunities that Mexico is currently presenting, MLA has been working closely with Austrade to identify new market opportunities for Australian beef and lamb,” said the association.
