Australia on course for strong year of cattle exports

01/11/2018
Australia exported just under 780,000 head of cattle during the first nine months of 2018, an increase of 24% compared the same period of last year, according to the latest data from research and marketing body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

Indonesia is the destination for the majority of Australia’s exported cattle. In the first nine months of the year, more than 420,000 head went there, an increase of 5% year on year. Shipments to Vietnam, the country’s second most important export destination, were up 9%. Big increases were seen in exports to Israel (+77%), China (+86%) and the Philippines (+409%).

“Cattle exports have regained their impetus this year, even in the face of challenging trading conditions,” MLA has said.

It has also forecast that if the current momentum continues, Australia’s cattle exports will finish the year close to one million head. This compared to the 867,000 head recorded in 2017.
