Australian sheepskin availability likely to decline in 2019

Research and marketing body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has forecast declines in slaughter numbers for lamb and sheep in 2019, suggesting skins will be in considerably shorter supply.

In a report it published on February 5, MLA said it forecasts lamb slaughter of 21.2 million head this year, a fall of 7% compared to 2018. It predicts that slaughter of older sheep will fall even more steeply, reaching 8 million head, which is 16% fewer than last year.

MLA said Australia’s national sheep flock is likely to stand at 65 million in mid-2019, which would be 3.7% lower than a year earlier.
