Visit to Pompeii tannery forms part of Stahl event
09/11/2018
The aim of this event, which Stahl first organised in 2016, is to propagate information about transparency and transparency in the leather edition.
The 2018 edition was organised in close collaboration with Italian tanning industry association UNIC. Previous partners have included Rompa Leder and the Igualada Leather Cluster in Barcelona.
There was a total of 97 attendees in Naples, who had the opportunity to learn about one of the earliest examples of leather production during a visit to the ancient city of Pompeii. A project to restore an ancient Roman tannery that functioned at the time of the town’s burial under volcanic ash in AD79 is currently in progress, supported by UNIC.
Speaking at the event, UNIC president Gianni Russo said: “We are delighted that Stahl has given us the opportunity to be a partner of this event. It has been inspirational to visit the ancient tannery uncovered in the excavations of Pompeii, whose restoration has entered the second phase - thanks to the commitment of UNIC. For UNIC it is a unique opportunity to show how we are contributing to the interests of the tanning industry in the best possible way.”
Following the visit to Pompeii, a panel discussion took place on the theme of ‘Tradition & Revolution’. There was also a visit to the new headquarters of Italian leather research body Stazione Sperimentale delle Pelli e delle Materie Concianti (SSIP) and a second panel discussion. This one was based around the theme ‘Innovation in the Leather Industry’ and saw contributions from experienced leather industry consultant Federico Brugnoli and Kathleen Kennedy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
