Stahl announces the death of former managing director
Leather chemicals company Stahl has announced the death of former managing director, Philip Rothwell. Mr Rothwell died at the age of 79 on November 8. He remained an active participant in industry events until very recently.

Philip Rothwell’s background was in tanning, following his father and grandfather into the industry. He completed the three-year course at the National Leathersellers College in London and worked at the start of his career at the Metropolitan Leather Company, then in Lancashire.

In 1965 he joined Stahl and worked for the company for 36 years. He started at Stahl UK and in 1988 moved to Stahl headquarters in the Netherlands to take up the role of European leather finish marketing manager. In 1990 he was appointed managing director of Stahl Holland, which is now called Stahl Europe.

He changed jobs again in 1998, becoming the managing director of Stahl India, in which he worked until his retirement in 2001. He led the project to construct a manufacturing plant for Stahl at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu.

On announcing Mr Rothwell’s death, Stahl chief executive, Huub van Beijeren, said: “We are very grateful to Philip for the good work he did for Stahl during all those years in UK, the Netherlands and India and we are sure that he will be remembered positively by his old colleagues and friends in Stahl. We offer our sincerest condolences to his wife and other family members and wish them the strength to bear this sad loss.”
