Stahl event focuses on water management
Following the success of its ReVeal event in November 2016, leather chemicals manufacturer Stahl recently held a second event dedicated to transparency in the leather supply chain.

Last year’s event focused on the transparency and traceability of calf skins. Stahl chose water management as the theme of this latest event, which took place on November 9 in Igualada, just outside Barcelona.

Around 100 people attended the event, which began at the headquarters of the Catalonia Leather Cluster. Stahl teamed up with the Igualada Leather Cluster to organise it. This was designed to show the importance of partnerships if the leather supply chain is to become more transparent.

The day was opened by Jordi Vidal Valls, cluster manager of the Catalonia Leather Cluster, who welcomed guests to the event. He was followed by Italian consultant Frederico Brugnoli, who offered an update on the process to develop a full transparency model for the leather industry. This project was started at the ReVeal event in 2016.

Charlie Walker from Global Water Intelligence (GWI) highlighted some of the challenges of water management while Frank Michel, executive director of the ZDHC Foundation, gave an overview of the ZDHC’s Roadmap-to-Zero programme.

Prior to the lunch break, Michael Costello, Stahl’s director of sustainability, led a panel discussion in which participants shared their vision of water management in leather production.

In the afternoon, a visit was made to the University of Igualada and a new water treatment facility. Visitors also got to hear about the rich history of leather production and use in the region during a tour of the Leather Museum of Igualada. A drinks reception and dinner were held at the museum to round off the event.

Reflecting on the event, Mr Costello said: “It was inspiring to come together with key players in the leather and water management industry. We shared our thoughts and concerns and elaborated on new ways to continue towards a transparent industry. We believe that partnership and determination are key for achieving this and it’s great to see that our belief is being endorsed by key stakeholders in the supply chain. This opens up a host of future possibilities.”
