Aquarno wastewater plant requests help from tanners

The director of a water purification plant that is being set up in Tuscany has said tanneries are welcome to test the water, and that three tanneries are already helping with the project.

A public-private partnership with a board of directors that includes tanners and local government representatives, Aquarno has embarked on projects to treat domestic effluent from various towns in the area.

The idea is to treat this wastewater and reuse it in the tanning process and reduce the volume of water that tanneries consume.

The ACQUA 360 has been undergoing tests since late 2016 and is expected to be fully operational within the next four years.

Aquarno director Nicola Andreanini told local press: “The most significant feedback will be that of the companies, as well as the feedback from [leather industry training institute] POTECO.

“Thanks to the tannery tests, we are validating the water purification process and the feasibility of reuse.”
