Double celebration for Tuscan tanners

05/02/2015
Tanners in the tanning district of Tuscany in Italy will celebrate the inauguration of new sedimentation tanks, part of a jointly funded project with the government, as well as new offices for POTECO on February 13.

POTECO is a research centre for the Italian tanning industry and its expansion will mean it can offer increased research and training.

New facilities include a lab enhanced with new equipment; new tanning machinery to replicate the tanning process to the drying stage, and new classrooms which will enable it to offer computing and language training.

The new sedimentation tanks of the Aquarno treatment plant are a result of the water management and water resources agreement signed in 2004 between tanners, the Ministry of Environment and local governments. When all tanks are operational, flow of wastewater will increase by more than 12,000m3 per day up to a maximum 30,000m3 per day.

The cost to tanners has been €14 million, while the government stumped up €40 million.
