To mark World Water Day (March 22), the Aquarno effluent treatment plant in the Tuscan tanning cluster at Santa Croce sull’ Arno, offered public tours of its facilities on March 19, the preceding Saturday.

Aquarno president, Lorenzo Mancini, told visitors that the plant that it plays a central role in the local tanning industry but is also an important contributor to “balancing the complex dynamics of the whole district”. The mayors of Santa Croce and of nearby Castelfranco di Soto, Giulia Deidda and Gabriele Toti, were among the visitors.

A public-private partnership with a board of directors that includes tanners and local government representatives, Aquarno, with its counterpart in neighbouring Ponte a Egola, Cuoiodepur, has embarked on projects to treat domestic effluent from various towns in the area. The idea is to treat this wastewater and try to re-use it in the tanning process and reduce the volume of water that tanneries consume.
