CICB continues ‘Leather Law’ blitz in Rio de Janeiro
Brazil’s main leather industry association CICB has given details about the latest stage of its ‘Leather Law’ (‘Lei do Couro’) blitz, which took place over 11 days in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The law forbids material or finished product manufacturers, brands and retailers from using the term ‘leather’ for any type of synthetic material. It has been on the statute books in Brazil since 1965. CICB is carrying out a series of ‘blitzes’ across the country to ensure the law is being followed.

The blitz in Rio de Janeiro focused on retail locations in some of Rio de Janeiro’s principal cities. A total of 1,810 stores and 26 shopping centres were visited.

Ricardo Michaelsen, coordinator of the initiative, said 70% of the locations visited had some type of error. This included a network of retail stores present in all the shopping centres that had been promoting PU jackets as “ecological leather”. This had been corrected by the time the inspectors visited the 10th store as another of the stores had passed on the message. Mr Michaelsen said CICB representatives also held a meeting at the company’s headquarters to explain the ‘Leather Law’.
