CICB keeps up its work to promote Brazil’s ‘leather law’
Brazil’s national tanning industry body CICB has said its work to protect leather under the country’s law number 4.888/65 the so-called Lei do Couro (or ‘leather law’) has now taken it to 18,000 retail outlets in the last two years.

CICB has explained that, thanks to having this law in place, retailers in Brazil are not permitted to use the name ‘leather’ to refer to any materials other than those that come from hides and skins.

The law has been in place for more than 50 years, but CICB launched a ‘blitz’ project to promote the law in 2014. The most recent addition to its work in this area is a new website aimed at informing retailers and consumers about what is and is not leather.

“This is one of our biggest projects,” said CICB president, José Fernando Bello, recently. “It’s not just about respecting the leather industry; it’s also about respecting the rights of the consumer.”
