Brazilian tanning industry association CICB has released details of the results of an  in the state of Paraná to vet proper use of the term ‘leather’ in consumer product descriptions. The exercise was part of nationwide ‘Blitz Project’ to cut out abuse of the word ‘leather’ and to educate retailers on the requirements of the country’s Leather Law, or ‘Lei do Couro’.

Using an official vehicle, marked with CICB’s logo and carrying the slogan, ‘There is no substitute for leather’, the organisation checked on more than 3,000 retailers in 30 towns and cities in Paraná over a six-week period in February and March.

Brazil’s Leather Law stipulates that consumer product brands and retailers may only describe an item as being made of leather if the material used comes from an animal’s hide or skin. Analysis of the results in Paraná shows that 37% of the retail outlets visited were in breach of this law in their presentation of some products.

CICB has said the data it collects during these blitz exercises will help with further development of the Leather Law.
