CICB pushes for leather law to make statute book

25/03/2011
The president of the Brazilian tanning industry association (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, has said his organisation has been frustrated in its attempts to stop companies in Brazil from misusing the word leather when describing synthetic materials or products made from them.

Mr Goerlich told local media that CICB has held meetings with the Brazilian Institute for Weights Measures and Industrial Quality (Inmetro), which he regards as the ideal organisation to drive the inclusion of a draft law defending leather on the country's statute book. Inmetro has insisted there is nothing it can do.

Attention has now turned to the Ministry for Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. “We are pushing ahead and hope to have a solution to this problem in the shortest time possible,” Mr Goerlich said.
