Consorzio prepares for eighth edition of Craft The Leather
08/05/2019
This is the eighth edition of ‘Craft The Leather’, which aims to teach talented young designers from across the world about vegetable-tanned leather made in Tuscany. The hope is that this will deepen their appreciation for the material and encourage them to use it as they begin their design careers.
Ten students have been chosen for the 2019 competition, representing design schools from all over the world. There are two students each from the US, the UK, Belgium and Japan, with one from Italy and one from Spain.
Along with their tutors, they are taking part in a training workshop in the town of San Miniato. It runs from May 5-11. The specially appointed tutor for this year is Diane Becker, who reprises her role from previous years.
During their week in the heart of Tuscany’s leather district, they are learning about all aspects of the veg-tanning process. They will come into contact with various kinds of vegetable-tanned leather, experience the production practices use to create it and explore the creative design process.
Whilst in Italy, they will select the materials they will use for the final phase of the project, which sees them design and produce a mini-collection of fashion accessories. These will be presented in the winter.
