Now in its sixth programme, the Consorzio has run the competition annually as part of its outreach programme with the aim of making a new generation of designers, and their tutors, more aware of Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather.
This year’s competition attracted ten students in all from seven countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas. They visited Tuscany in May 2017 to learn about vegetable tanning and then had until the end of last year to come up with their designs.
Heleen Sintobin’s winning entry was a three-piece furniture collection she called Tartufo, which combines dark veg-tanned leather with lighter-coloured wood. The designer said she had learned about ancient techniques for colouring leather as part of the project.
Tartufo was chosen by a panel of judges and by public vote. Visitors to Lineapelle in Milan in February were invited to view all the entries and to vote for their favourite.
On learning of her success, Ms Sintobin told leatherbiz she was very happy to have won. She said: “For me this was an opportunity to dive into the rich history of vegetable-tanned leather and to reinterpret an ancient colouring technique. As a designer I like adding this layer of storytelling. Talking and pitching to professionals at Lineapelle was a great learning opportunity.”
