Tuscany mourns the loss of a towering tanning industry figure

06/01/2017
The specialist veg-tan consortium of tanneries in Tuscany has lost one of its leading figures with the death at the end of December of Alfredo Ghizzani. He was 75 and had been ill for some time.

With two of his brothers, Mr Ghizzani founded the family tanning business, Conceria  Ghizzani, in the early 1960s, later converting it into the Conceria Montana, which still operates successfully today in San Miniato and is one of the 22 tanneries that make up the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (the Consortium for Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather). Alfredo Ghizzani served as president of the organisation between 1994 and 2000 and also held senior positions in Italy’s national tanning industry association, UNIC.

On learning of Mr Ghizzani’s death, the Consorzio issued a statement saying he had played a particularly important role in establishing up-to-date wastewater treatment facilities for tanners in Tuscany and in building strong links between leather producers and academics in the region.
