UNIDO to support building of Sialkot Tannery Zone

23/10/2017
Senior officials from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) have pledged the organisation’s full support for the creation of a new leather cluster in Sialkot, Pakistan, according to local media reports.

The officials, which included UNIDO industrial development officer Ivan Kral and local representative Nadia Aftab, made this pledge during an address to leather industry stakeholders at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

UNIDO will help the leather sector in Sialkot to effectively control its environmental impact through an initiative entitled “Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation through Water Resource Management in Leather Industrial Zone Development”. It will be funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The new leather zone will bring all tanners located in and around Sialkot to a centralised location on the outskirts of the city. Facilities like a common effluent treatment plant and a solid waste disposal site would be built to accommodate these operations.

Those in attendance at the meeting heard that a total of 554 plots have been allotted to local tanners at the Sialkot Tannery Zone. The design of the zone’s common effluent treatment plant is also underway.
